Abstract
In this event, we will explore the concept of sustainable wellbeing for budding language industry professionals in a deregulated language industry that is becoming increasingly more complex. Using the latest research in the field, we will first reflect on the many potential physical, cognitive and ergonomics stressors for language industry professionals and consider self-care as an imperative for all. As part of this imperative, coaching-style conversations with fellow translators and interpreters to discuss professional dilemmas can be a great way not only to break the feeling of isolation one can experience, but also to give each other the space to channel one's inner resources and a safe space where one feels truly listened to. Because they can help reduce stress and boost confidence, such conversation could help increase the professional performance and translators and interpreters as they benefit their overall wellbeing. This event will also adopt a hands-on approach by introducing participants to some of the key ingredients of coaching-style conversations (i.e., deep listening, use of silence and effective questioning) as a concrete form of peer-support and, therefore, self-care, for language professionals. Please note that participants will be invited to take part in activities in which they will be invited to explore facets of coaching-style conversations with other participants. These activities will take place in breakout rooms on Zoom. Please make sure that you are in a position to turn your camera on and participate in the conversations if you would like to take part in these activities. However, participants who are not in a position to do so will be given the opportunity to opt out from breakout room activities.
Certificates of Attendance are available upon request only and are subject to an additional charge of £5, payable directly to the AIT account. For further details, please contact treasurer@ait-professionals.com.
