Overview

Talk on Diversifying language services and future skills by Raisa McNab

Speaker's Biography:

Raisa McNab is CEO at the UK’s Association of Translation Companies (ATC), the trade association for companies operating in the UK’s language services industry. As the ATC’s CEO, Raisa spans the boundaries between the language services industry, academia and the public sector, promoting collaboration and best practice. Raisa is a practising translator and language specialist and her long experience as a production, quality and development manager have given her a deep insight into the language services industry and the challenges it faces in a changing global landscape. Raisa holds an MA in Translation & Interpreting from her native Finland.

Overview:

When asked if the language specialists of today have the skills needed in the future, 47% of participants in a global language industry conversation – freelance translators, academics, consultants and language service company representatives – said ‘No’. In a rapidly changing industry landscape, it seems that we still have a long way to go in working out the future shape of language services, translation and interpreting, and the skills we will need to thrive.

In this talk, Raisa McNab, CEO at the UK’s Association of Translation Companies, will introduce the latest academic and industry takes on future skills, discuss how practising translators and interpreters can diversify their skillset, and what role industry-academia collaboration can play in training the future generation of language specialists.

This talk will support you in:

  • following current conversations around future skills needed in the language services industry;

  • planning how to continue to diversify your own skillset in a rapidly changing professional landscape; and

  • gaining an overview of how industry-academia collaboration can strengthen the development of future skills.
