Alternative Pathways to Translating for the Stage - with Sarah Maitland

Drawing on her extensive experience of translating theatre both for publication and performance, Sarah will address these and other questions facing emerging theatre translators today. With a focus on exploring lesser-known routes to performance in translation, and the distinctive challenges that come along with them, this practical workshop will demystify the key dispositions these alternative pathways to translating for the stage ask of the emerging theatre translator.

Sarah Maitland is a theatre translator and academic. She has translated for organisations including the Royal Court Theatre, the Cervantes Theatre, the Theatre Royal Bath, the Unicorn and New Diorama theatres in London, the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center in New York, and Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. Her work also includes translation for stage and screen, subtitling and surtitling, and the translation of short dramatic forms and micro-plays. Her translations have been published by Inti Press, Ediciones Antígona and Caos Editorial. She is also author of What is Cultural Translation? (2017), published by Bloomsbury Academic, and co-editor of Translation as Advocacy: Perspectives on Practice, Performance and Publishing (2024), published by John Murray Languages. She is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Specialised Translation and until 2021 was an elected member of the Executive Council of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS).
