What does it mean to share a language? Can a language truly unite — or does it also carry the power to divide?

To mark International Portuguese Language Day, AIIC Brasil invites you to a thought-provoking and timely conversation with Caetano Galindo — award-winning professor at the Universidade Federal do Paraná, and one of most distinguished Brazilian translators and writers.

Moderated by our dear colleague Jayme Pinto, this session will explore the Portuguese language far beyond grammar and vocabulary, engaging with its deeper cultural, historical and political dimensions. Together, we will reflect on the language’s dual potential as both a unifying force and a source of fragmentation; on questions of belonging and the enduring imprint of colonial relations; and on the complex, sometimes tense, dynamics shaping contemporary interactions between Brazil and Portugal.

The conversation will also shed light on the lived experiences of the Brazilian community in Portugal, addressing the linguistic, cultural and social challenges they encounter, and what these reveal about identity, perception and power.

At its core, this session invites us to consider the Portuguese language not merely as a means of communication, but as a living space of negotiation: a marker of identity, a repository of history, and a powerful lens through which we understand ourselves and others.
