Talk on Public Service Interpreter Training and Certification in the UK: a historical overview by Brooke Townsley

Speaker's Biography:

Brooke Townsley is a working interpreter, translator and trainer. He taught Interpreting and Translation at University for 23 years. He currently provides training for Level 6 Diploma in Interpreting candidates, along with preparation for the Level 6 Certificate in Translation and the Level 7 Diploma in Translation.

Abstract:

The need for minimum benchmark professional standards for interpreting and translation in public services is a familiar topic within the PSI profession; however, the public services' view on minimum standards and qualifications is more nuanced. This presentation will consider the role of benchmark qualifications (such as the DPSI and the DCI) in establishing and maintaining standards in PSIT and evaluate their effectiveness or suitability for purpose. It will also reflect on the sometimes divergent perspectives on minimum standards and professional qualifications from public service providers and practitioners themselves.
