Overview
The benefits of being a member of the National Union of Professional Interpreters and Translators (NUPIT)
Speakers:
Andy Murray is National Officer for Community, Youth Worker, Not for Profit sectors, which includes an extremely diverse set of sub sectors such as international aid charities, Housing Associations, children charities and Faith Workers. It also includes groups of self-employed members such a Blue Badge Tourist Guides, Spoken Language interpreters and translators (NUPIT) and British Sign Language interpreters (NUBSLI). During the Covid pandemic Unite ensured that financial support was put in place for self- employed members through the Government Self Employed Income Scheme (SEIS). For over a decade he has also been Chair of the Professional Interpreters for Justice Steering Committee and co-ordinated the response of PI4J on a range of government initiatives particularly affecting the courts, police and Health Service and made representation to committees of parliament. In this talk Andy will discuss the ways in which Unite can provide advice and support for interpreters and translators on both individual and collective issues.
Rhona Desmond, NUPIT branch secretary, Unite the Union. As well as holding this position, Rhona has been working as a freelance translator for the past 20 years. She is also a member of the ITI. Prior to that Rhona held several temporary positions in the NHS and worked as a sessional interpreter for GRIP.
