Overview
"Interpreting in Maternity Care: Modality Choices, Video-Mediated Interpreting (VMI), and Working Effectively with Care Providers" by Li Li
Speaker's Bio:
Li Li is a Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Stirling. She completed her PhD at the University of East Anglia, where her research examined maternity interpreting services in UK healthcare settings using a multi-stakeholder, mixed-methods approach. Her research focuses on healthcare interpreting as an organised and systemic practice, with particular attention to interpreting modality decisions, the use of video-mediated interpreting (VMI), and the implications for interpreters working in high-stakes maternity contexts. Her doctoral research has informed impact-focused training activities and has been cited in national guidance on cross-cultural communication in maternity care, including by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Li Li is a certified Mandarin Chinese–English interpreter and translator, a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and the Association of Interpreting and Translation, and a registrant of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters.
This session will explore:

How interpreting modality decisions are made and what interpreters need to anticipate
Working effectively with care providers in video-mediated interpreting (VMI) maternity encounters
