Interpreting for Victims of Crime
An 8-week self-study course designed for professional interpreters who regularly work in emotionally-charged settings. Interpreters play a vital role in connecting victims and survivors of trauma with service providers and many times they are not equipped or prepared with the necessary tools or skills to provide a trauma-informed service.
You will learn about the field of victim services in the UK and the protocols for working in these settings. The intricacies of interpreting for victims and survivors of violent crime, domestic and child abuse, victims of torture, human trafficking, and modern slavery.
You’ll acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become a trauma-informed interpreter, understand bias, and also how to manage effective cultural interventions to promote survivor autonomy. Working regularly in emotionally charged settings can be traumatic for interpreters, so you will also learn about vicarious trauma and self-care to help you start on a wellness program as a preventative measure.
