Talk on INTERPRETING FOR SOCIAL WORKERS by lawyer - linguist Sue Leschen

This session led by lawyer- linguist Sue Leschen, a full member of AIT, will focus on the role that social workers play in our society. The webinar will be useful for all colleagues interpreting in this field and for those looking to work in it.

Information will include inter alia:

  • The multifaceted role of the social worker: rights advocate, care coordinator, safeguarding of vulnerable clients

  • Venues where social workers work: Social Services offices, home visits, prisons, hospitals, courts, schools

  • Social workers and professional conduct and ethics: compassion, empathy and independence

  • Social workers and clients who are minors: friend (prevent child abuse) or foe (support unwanted adoption of client's child)

  • Social workers and the elderly: friend (prevent elder abuse) or foe (advocate for unwanted care home placement)

  • Social workers and the mentally ill: friend (support in the community) or foe (advocate for Mental Health Act detention)

  • Social workers and interpreters : same client but different disciplines and perspectives?
