This lecture – conducted entirely in Italian – will trace a portrait of Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia. Battaglia documented the life and crime of the mafia in Sicily over the years, passionately engaging in Palermo’s social and political life. Battaglia’s extraordinary life and courage will emerge through her beautiful, compelling and visually arresting photographic work.

One of the greats of Italian photography, for decades Letizia Battaglia chronicled life in Italy, especially in Sicily, and the impact of the Mafia on life there. This seminar, conducted in Italian, will be run by Ottavia Castellina, a professional photographer and tutor of Italian.

To coincide with the Lucrezia Battaglia exhibition currently running at the Photographers' Gallery in London, this seminar will introduce you to the life and work of the noted Italian photographer Lucrezia Battaglia.


What will we cover?

- Letizia Battaglia biography and the historical, artistic and political background
- Her photographic work and artistic influences
- How to analyse a photograph and a photographic series
- There will be a group discussion in Italian at the end of the session.


By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of this course students will have gained some knowledge of Letizia Battaglia’s work and extraordinary life story and a better understanding of the political and artistic context she lived in. They will also be better able to discuss photography in Italian.

The seminar will be taught entirely in Italian and students should have an upper-intermediate/advanced knowledge of the language.
