For strong intermediate learners of Italian,this course explores the rich and dynamic world of 20th-century Italian literature and cinema. Learners will examine how Italy’s cultural, political, and social changes shaped artistic expression. They will engage with major writers and directors, while considering key historical contexts including Fascism, post-war reconstruction, and modernisation.
Close readings in Italian and English and film analysis will be followed by discussion to explore the evolving narratives of Italian identity and collective memory.


By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Recognise and discuss key authors, directors, and works from 20th-century Italy.

  • Compare narrative techniques used in literature and cinema, and evaluate their effectiveness.

  • Engage confidently in discussions about the cultural, political, and social significance of Italian literary and cinematic works.


You should have studied Italian for at least 3/4 years. This course is roughly equivalent to an A-level standard but does not lead to an examination.
